Like it or not, Limpopo is a great province. Since the unbanning of people’s organisations in 1990, the ANC Youth League has only had four presidents, two of them from Limpopo Province, viz, Peter Mokaba and Julius Malema. In a country with nine provinces you would expect Limpopo to get the presidency after eight conferences.
As a province, we are doing well in terms of providing a president to the Youth League. It is undeniable that in the entire history of the League, Malema has provided the most in-your-face and controversial style of leadership ever. In less than a year in office the young lion from Seshego was a household name after winning a fiercely contested presidency in 2008 in Managung and bringing down a country president(Thabo Mbeki) in one of the most ignominious political recalls in modern history. After stating that “we will kill for Zuma,” the firebrand had the attention of every adult South African as he made one controversial statement after another to become the number one politician in the country, including eclipsing his boss President Jacob Zuma.
Intoxicated by power, Malema criss-crossed the whole country rallying support and fighting internal ANC enemies. In his campaign to earn the title of King Maker and supreme South African politician, Malema made enemies in his Youth League, in the ANC, in the Tripartite Alliance and almost everywhere else. In his province, Limpopo, he began to lose support and earn permanent enemies. A close ally of Premier Cassel Mathale, he was accused of basically appointing the cabinet. Herein lies the rub, reliable sources claim.
My heroic attempts to establish when the fallout between Malema and Masoga have borne no fruit. What I remember is that these two leaders were not so long ago great friends and comrades. Whatever the reason for their fallout, the consequences have led to a titanic battle that has kept the two titans in the news throughout the length and breadth of Mzansi. Those close to power in Limpopo say that after the fallout Malema vowed to make life difficult for Masoga, thus the allegation that Masoga missed out on being an MEC as per Malema’s instruction. According to sources it is this bitterness on the part of Masoga that inspired this battle royale between the two leaders of the Youth League.
That Julius Malema and Lehlogonolo Masoga are South African political celebrities is undisputable. The media is awash with daily developments about this political soapie in which Masoga insists that he is still the democratically elected chairperson of the ANCYL while Malema’s ally Frans Moswane continues to be an effectual reigning chairperson of the League. Despite the fact that he is supposed to be the new leader of the Young Lions in Limpopo, little is said about him as the focus is on the two giants.
The tragedy of this broedertwis between the two is that the ANCYL is suffering untold damage, split between the supporters of Malema and Masoga. Like the MDC in Zimbabwe and COPE in South Africa, two factions of the Youth League have emerged. With Malema’s deputy Andile Lungisa in bed with Masoga, the drama becomes more interesting. From Gauteng to Eastern Cape; from Mpumalanga to Northwest; from Western Cape to Free State; from KwaZulu Natal to Northern Cape; There are two ANC Youth Leagues as the organisation prepares for its elective conference scheduled for next year. Just like the rumblings in the ANC mother body in the face of the 2010 conference, the battle for the control of the Youth League is hotting up.
Since the titanic battle between Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki for the soul of the ANC IN 2007, every time there is an imminent conference(branch, regional, provincial and national) in the ANC two factions inevitably emerge and dirty tricks has become the hallmark of the ruling party. Qualifying branches and delegates are disqualified in a fraudulent campaign waged by the group that controls the organisation at any given time. This eventually leads to a disgruntled faction that is on the receiving end. From branches to regions to provinces this is now organisational culture. The ANCYL, like a good child, has learnt from the parent, Thus the Malema and Masoga soapie.
As a citizen of South Africa living in Limpopo Province, I must admit that although what is happening in the Youth League is not “nice,” I am strangely proud that out of the nine provinces, it is this province that has produced these two titans of the youth organisation. Not so long ago only Malema was a household name. Now Masoga has achieved the same status as he is talked about all over the country. It is an undisputable fact that the two strongest leaders of the ANCYL in South Africa today are in Limpopo, finish and klaar. They deserve an award Mr Premier.`
